- Established in 1687, Scotland's premier Order of Chivalry is 'The
Most Ancient and Noble Order of the Thistle'.
- The Order's motto reads "Nemo me impune lacessit" which
literally means "No-one assails me with impunity", but is
more often translated in Scots as "Wha daurs meddle wi me".
- Of all the plants that changed history, such as corn, sugarcane
and spices, the thistle must surely be the most humble.
- A common or garden weed, it occurs in a number of different varieties,
including spear, stemless, cotton, Our Lady's and musk thistle. Crucially,
they're all extremely prickly.
- It may not have the sovereignty of the Lion Rampant or the heritage
of the Saltire, but the homely thistle is a symbol with which every
Scot can identify.
