Established in 1687, Scotland's premier Order of Chivalry is 'The Most Ancient and Noble Order of the Thistle'. The Order's motto reads "Nemo me impune lacessit" which literally means "No-one assails me with impunity", but is more often translated in Scots as "Wha daurs meddle wi me". Of all the plants that changed history, such as corn, sugarcane and spices, the thistle must surely be the most humble. A common or garden weed, it occurs in a number of different varieties, including spear, stemless, cotton, Our Lady's and musk thistle. Crucially, they're all extremely prickly. It may not have the sovereignty of the Lion Rampant or the heritage of the Saltire, but the homely thistle is a symbol with which every Scot can identify.
