Given its picturesque setting, it's perhaps not surprising that Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland. What's perhaps more surprising is that it has featured in at least four films, including The Master of Ballantrae, Highlander, Loch Ness and The World Is Not Enough. In the 1995 film Loch Ness, Eilean Donan played a Castle Double, standing in for the real castle on Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle. Although the present castle dates mainly from the early 20th century, the island of Eilean Donan itself has been a fortified site for at least 800 years. The island takes its name from St. Donan who lived here as a religious hermit in about 600 AD.
