- Given its picturesque setting, it's perhaps not surprising that
Eilean Donan is one of the most photographed castles in Scotland.
- What's perhaps more surprising is that it has featured in at least
four films, including The Master of Ballantrae, Highlander, Loch Ness
and The World Is Not Enough.
- In the 1995 film Loch Ness, Eilean Donan played a Castle Double,
standing in for the real castle on Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle.
- Although the present castle dates mainly from the early 20th century,
the island of Eilean Donan itself has been a fortified site for at
least 800 years.
- The island takes its name from St. Donan who lived here as a religious
hermit in about 600 AD.
